Police seek 'missile throwers' from EDL march

POLICE are looking for these seven men, believed to have been responsible for throwing missiles on the day of the English Defence League march.

On Saturday, July 14, the English Defence League marched in the city centre and counter-protesters held demonstrations.

The event was mostly peaceful, but Avon and Somerset police ended up responding to a number of incidents and 16 people were arrested for offences including going equipped to cause damage and assaulting a police officer.

An investigation was also launched to identify other offences committed and those responsible.

Detectives investigating the throwing of missiles have identified seven men who might have important information which could help with their enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Bevan said: "These demonstrations were largely peaceful but there were a small number of people prepared to commit crime and spoil the event for everyone else taking part.

"We are committed to ensuring that all those who committed crime are brought to justice and face the consequences of their behaviour.

"Our enquiries have led us to seven men who we believe have information which can help us progress our investigation. I would appeal to those men, or anyone who recognises them, to come forward."

On July 14, about 300 EDL members marched, protesting against what they claimed was the "Islamification" of the city. About 500 people took part in a rival demonstration, called We Are Bristol, and there were violent scenes as anti-fascist protesters set bins on fire in Redcliffe Way to try and stop the EDL marchers reaching Temple Meads station after a rally in Queen Square.

Missiles were thrown by people in both groups.

Last month, anti-EDL campaigner Robin Carling was ordered by the courts to do unpaid work after he daubed "No EDL" on a barrier near the M32.
