'Professional criminal' jailed for three years

"ONE man crime wave" David Soper has been jailed for three years, three months after admitting a raft of offences including supplying drugs to undercover police.

Soper, 38, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to supplying police with Class A drugs heroin and cocaine in July last year, Bristol Court heard.

He also admitted handling stolen goods, burglary, theft from a car, going equipped for theft and the attempted burglary of the Sue Ryder charity shop in Worle.

Judge Mark Horton told him: "You have been a professional criminal for most of your life, including 34 previous convictions for burglary, mostly of commercial premises.

"In June and July last year you conducted your own, personal crime wave and committed offences on a daily basis. You were arrested, bailed, and carried on offending."

Simon Burns, prosecuting, said Soper stole a teenager's £700 bicycle from outside a Weston-super-Mare supermarket.

Eight days later he burgled a printing shop and stole laptop computers and was also found with other stolen property, the court heard.

Mr Burns said Soper broke into a Ford Ka and was chased off by the owner. He left behind a foil-lined, Tesco shopping bag in which police discovered a prescription in his name. After being arrested and bailed, Soper dealt small amounts of crack cocaine and heroin to undercover police on four occasions, Mr Burns told the court.

Nadeen Aullybocus, defending, said his client pleaded guilty to all matters and had become drug-free while in custody.

He said: "At 15 he fell into drugs and since then has spent half his life in custody. He comes out, manages for a while and then falls back into a crime spree."

Mr Aullybocus said his client had a daughter and felt he needed to get a grip on his life.

He told the court: "He knows there is no alternative but custody. He welcomes it. If he is given a prison sentence he will finish what has been started. Hopefully, when released, he intends to move back with his partner and daughter."
