Russian punk rockers supported by Bristol MP found guilty

Russian punk band Pussy Riot - who gained the support of Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy - have been jailed after being found guilty of hooliganism charges by a Moscow court.

Earlier this month Ms McCarthy was forced to defend a trip to Moscow in which she attended the trial of the three female punk rockers.

The three "Pussy Riot" feminists were accused of hooliganism for a "punk prayer" criticising Russian president Vladimir Putin, which they performed after storming the altar of Moscow's main cathedral.

They have each been jailed for two years.

Judge Marina Syrova convicted the women - Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29 - of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.

Labour MP Ms McCarthy, who is also shadow foreign minister and who paid for the trip herself, said she believed the women were not getting a fair trial.

She also live tweeted from the court about the differences between the UK and Russian judicial systems.

But Ms McCarthy faced some criticism for going on the trip, with some saying she should be focusing more on her East Bristol constituency.

Easton businessman Abdul Malik told the Post he understood that human rights were a big national concern, but that there were lots of other problems in East Bristol that Ms McCarthy could be prioritising.

He said: "One issue that Ms McCarthy could be looking at currently are the ongoing meetings and consultation into discretionary licensing schemes which would mean landlords had to provide certain standards to tenants before they can rent properties.

"This is something that affects a lot of people in East Bristol and it would be nice to see some of our MPs involved in that.

"That's just one example of a local issue that needs to be addressed."

Someone calling themselves bris28, commenting on thisisbristol.co.uk, said: "I didn't realise that boundary changes for Miss McCarthy's constituency now included the Far East!"

But others have supported Ms McCarthy's involvement in the court case.

Cazzatherazza, commenting on thisisbristol.co.uk, said: "I am from Bristol East and am proud to have Kerry as my MP.

"She is also foreign affairs representative for the Labour Party.

"The band are not hooligans and are facing the most unfair of trials – it's no better than internment! Feminism is not a bad thing!"

Ms McCarthy told the Post: "I'm paying for the trip myself. I'm away for 48 hours.

"I am not having a holiday this summer.

"I have four full-time members of staff in the constituency holding the fort, and have kept in contact, dealt with emails etc.

"I am fully aware of licensing meetings but that's a council matter.

"Incidentally Stephen Williams MP was at an event in Bristol last night showing his photos from a recent Palestinian trip – I wouldn't for one moment get my political allies to complain about his visit.

"It's important MPs take an interest in international as well as national and local issues. That's what we were elected for."
