Look around last craft of its kind

THE last surviving RAF Bristol Britannia transport aircraft is opening to the public to celebrate Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

The Britannia is based at Cotswold Airport, near Kemble in Gloucestershire and maintained by the Bristol Britannia XM496 Preservation Society.

On Saturday, from noon to 5pm, the aircraft will be open for tours of the flight deck, film and artefact displays and the chance to experience the aircraft as it was in service, from 1960 to 1975.

There is no set charge for admission, but visitors will be invited to make donations.

Also due to display alongside the Britannia is an RAF Vampire jet aircraft cockpit, and a selection of historic military vehicles.

Visitors should enter Cotswold Airport North Gate from the A433 Cirencester to Tetbury road, and then follow the signs to LRTT.

The RAF Britannia fleet, based at Lyneham and Brize Norton, flew cargo and service personnel and their families all over the world.

Known as "Regulus", the Britannia has many claims to fame, including transporting Tutankhamun's treasures from Egypt to the UK and supporting Concorde during her flight trials.
