SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has struck a deal with a college which will see recruit 60 apprentices over the next four years.
The council will work with a college coordinator from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in Filton to recruit around 240 apprentices.
The apprentices will go on to work in council departments including housing, care, catering, street services and horticulture.
South Gloucestershire councillor John Goddard said: "This is a fantastic new scheme which is being launched thanks to a partnership forged with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.
"Apprenticeships can be a stepping stone for young people to break the cycle of long-term unemployment while learning new skills to equip them with a better chance of securing a job in the future. Apprentices will not only work for the council, but we will be able to offer practical help to our suppliers to encourage them to find openings in their businesses to accommodate our young people."
Kevin Hamblin, principal of South Gloucestershire and StroudCollege, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council for their apprenticeship scheme.
"It is great news that so many young people will benefit from the scheme. We have very capable young people within South Gloucestershire who will make the most of these opportunities.
"It is a great career start for them and will allow them to make a real contribution to their community."
